Modernizing a Digital Asset Management system to enhance usability and simplify workflows

Challenge
Following Simpleview’s acquisition of a company specializing in Digital Asset Management (DAM), the product had to be brought into the Simpleview tech ecosystem and integrate well with other products in order to be usable and beneficial to our clients.

Role
UI/UX design, user testing

I analyzed comparable products and features to uncover user needs

By researching similar products and features, I uncovered key user needs that informed the design for a more effective product:

  • asset types and orientation

  • key filters and sorting

  • workflow from browsing/searching, funneling, downloading

  • zoom views & aspect ratio/file size

  • batch upload and download

I conducted in-person user testing to gleam insights on user flow and usability

  • Had users complete tasks and prompts related to searching, favoriting, uploading and downloading

  • Had users complete discoverability actions to ensure UI locations and structure was as expected and ideal

Key Findings led to adding an asset queue and being able to edit an asset in grid-view

  • An asset queue functioned similar to an '“add to cart” feature, where users could mark assets for review before downloading, saving time and making the workflow more efficient for users

  • Being able to edit an asset name straight from the grid view enables for a more efficient task completion and avoids requiring the user to click and load the asset and then go into edit its meta data in its respective form fields.

Impact

A Digital Asset Management system that integrated with the Simpleview CMS and allowed a fluid workflow for managing assets that feed into the client website.
